The pineapple,(ananas comosus) is a common name for a tropical plant and its edible fruit named for its resemblance to pine cone. Pineapples have a very interesting history. Facts show that the origin of the pineapple is South America.
The natives of south Brazil and Paraguay spread the pineapple throughout South America and it eventually reached the Caribbean, The natives of South America called the pineapple “delicious fruit” in their local dialect.
Christopher Columbus discovered the fruit on the island of Guadeloupe; he called it pina de indes meaning pine of the Indians and brought it with him to Spain. The Spanish then introduced it into Philippines and Hawaii.
Around 1900’s large scale pineapple cultivation began in Hawaii pioneered by James Drummond Dole,Del monte and Maui Pineapple.
World pineapple produce statistics indicate that 80 countries world wide produce pineapples,totaling 32 million pounds yearly and Approximately 75% of the world’s pineapple supply originates from one of the following countries: Thailand, Philippines, Brazil, China, India, Costa Rica, Nigeria, Kenya, Mexico and Indonesia.
